Verify your identity for Companies House

Looking for the GOV.UK guidance on verifying your identity for Companies House? Here's what it says, in plain English — and how to get verified today.

TaxStats ID is a private service, not a government website. We are a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP AP006589) and charge a service fee to verify your identity and file on your behalf. You are not required to use us — you can verify directly with Companies House for free via GOV.UK.

Verify your identity for Companies House

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, every UK company director and Person with Significant Control (PSC) must verify their identity with Companies House. It became mandatory from 18 November 2025. New directors and PSCs verify when they're appointed or when the company is formed; existing directors and PSCs verify by their company's next confirmation statement. Once verified, you get a Companies House personal code that proves who you are for all future filings.

PSC identity verification

A Person with Significant Control (PSC) — broadly, anyone who owns or controls more than 25% of a company — must verify their identity in the same way as a director. If you're both a director and a PSC, you still only verify once. Companies House is phasing PSC verification in by birth month: PSCs are given a personal window based on the month they were born, so check when yours opens and don't leave it to the deadline.

Companies House personal code — what it is and how you get one

Your Companies House personal code (sometimes searched as a "personal verification code") is a unique identifier issued to you once your identity is verified. You get one by completing identity verification through either route below. You then give the code to your company or your agent so your role can be confirmed and filings made. One code covers every directorship and PSC role you hold — you never need more than one, and it's separate from your company's authentication code.

Deadlines: when you must verify

  • Mandatory since 18 November 2025. This started a 12-month transition — it is not itself the deadline for everyone.
  • Existing directors & PSCs: verify by your company's next confirmation statement, with a final backstop of 18 November 2026.
  • New directors / PSCs and new companies: verify at appointment or incorporation.
  • PSCs: a personal window based on your birth month — verify when yours opens.

The two routes: free GOV.UK One Login vs an authorised agent

Both routes produce the same Companies House personal code. The free route is right for many people; an authorised agent helps when you don't have the exact documents GOV.UK One Login needs, you're overseas, or you'd rather it was handled for you.

Common Questions

How do I verify my identity with Companies House?

There are two routes, and both give you the same Companies House personal code. The free route is GOV.UK One Login — you verify yourself online with a biometric passport or a UK photocard driving licence. The other route is verifying through a Companies House Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) like TaxStats ID (£39, usually within 24 hours), which accepts a wider range of documents and offers video and in-person checks. You only need to verify once.

What is a personal verification code (Companies House personal code)?

Your Companies House personal code is a unique identifier Companies House issues to you once your identity has been verified. You give it to your company (or your agent) so your directorship or PSC role can be confirmed and filings can be made. One code covers all of your directorships and PSC roles — you never need more than one.

Who needs to verify their identity with Companies House?

All company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) must verify their identity. New directors and PSCs verify as part of incorporation or appointment; existing directors and PSCs must verify by their company's next confirmation statement, with a backstop of 18 November 2026.

How long does identity verification take?

Digital verification takes about 5–10 minutes online. Through TaxStats ID your personal code is typically issued within 24 hours. Video call verification takes 15–20 minutes by appointment.

I'm both a director and a PSC — do I need to verify twice?

No. One verification covers all your roles. Whether you're a director, a PSC, or both across several companies, you only verify once and use the same personal code everywhere.

Is the paid route required, or can I verify for free?

You are never required to pay. You can verify for free with GOV.UK One Login if you have a biometric passport or a UK photocard driving licence. People use an authorised agent when they don't have those documents, are overseas, or want it handled quickly with support — the fee is for that convenience and the wider document options, not for the code itself.
