Companies House identity verification not working? Common problems and how to fix them

Most Companies House identity-verification problems come down to a handful of causes — and nearly all are fixable. Below are the ones we see most often as an Authorised Corporate Service Provider, with what's actually going wrong and how to get past it.

If you'd rather a person sorted it for you, an ACSP like TaxStats can run the check, chase any issue and confirm your identity to Companies House on your behalf.

Key facts

Document not recognised:
Use an in-date biometric passport, UK/EEA photo driving licence, or a supported ID
No company number:
Not a problem — verification is person-level; verify first
"Under the required age":
Identity verification needs an adult — a young child can't complete a biometric check
Still stuck?:
A video call or in-person check with a human is the usual fix

1. Your ID document isn't being accepted

The online check needs a supported, in-date document — most commonly a biometric passport or a photo driving licence. The most common avoidable failure is an expired document, or a blurry/badly-lit scan. Check the expiry date, use good lighting, and let the camera focus. If your only document genuinely isn't supported online, switch to a video call or an in-person check, where a person can review it.

2. Your details don't match your document

If the name or date of birth you entered doesn't match your ID exactly, the check can fail. Enter your legal name precisely as it appears on the document you're using.

3. "You need a company number" — but you're forming a new company

You don't need a company number to verify. Verification is person-level: verify first, then use your personal code at incorporation. See "Can I verify without a company number?".

4. "Unable to verify your ID — under the required age"

Identity verification has to be completed by an adult — a young child cannot complete a biometric ID check. This usually appears when someone is trying to verify a minor who is, legitimately, a person with significant control (for example where shares are held for a child). The verification can't be forced through; the right step is to check the position with Companies House. We explain this in verifying a PSC who is under 18.

When to switch route

If the online (digital) check isn't working after a couple of careful attempts, don't keep retrying the same way — a video call or in-person check with a person is usually the quickest fix. And if you'd like help, you're welcome to ask us to walk you through it or send a link by email and text.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Companies House identity verification keep failing?

The usual causes are an unsupported or expired ID document, poor photo/scan quality, a mismatch between your details and your document, or trying to verify on behalf of someone who can't complete a biometric check (for example a young child). Each has a specific fix — see the sections above.

My document isn't recognised — what can I use?

Use an in-date document the check supports — typically a biometric passport or a photo card driving licence. Make sure it has not expired and that the photo/scan is clear and well lit. If your only ID isn't supported online, a video call or in-person check is usually the answer.

It says I need a company number — but I don't have one yet

You don't need one. Identity verification is tied to you, not a company. Verify as an individual first and use your personal code at incorporation. See our guide to verifying before incorporation.

Can someone do the verification for me?

An Authorised Corporate Service Provider can carry out the identity check and confirm it to Companies House for you. They can't skip the check or change the rules, but they can guide you through it and offer video or in-person options if online isn't working.
